What are Warty Skin Growths?

Warty skin growths or verrucas, also referred to as warts, are rough, small, and hard skin growths that develop on the skin. Warty skin growths are triggered by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are contagious.

Warts are likely to be found on any part of the body, though they occur more frequently on hands, feet, and the face.

Warts are due to the HPV virus, which infects the body via cuts or cracks on the skin. The virus can be transmitted by:

Direct contact with the infected individual

Contact with contaminated surfaces

Sharing personal items

Though warts may resolve independently, there are treatment options available to have them removed. They include:

Over-the-counter treatments: Salicylic acid or cryotherapy are used to destroy warts.

Prescription drugs: More potent treatments might be recommended by a physician, including cantharidin or imiquimod.

Surgical removal: Warts sometimes have to be removed by surgery.
