The conclave to elect the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church will begin on May 7th at the Vatican. The first ballot will take place after lunch on the same day. The meeting of cardinals that took place in the Vatican on Wednesday decided on the date for the papal election to find the successor of the late Pope Francis. The conclave will be held at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, which has been temporarily closed for preparations and will be reopened to the public after the conclave.
In the days leading up to the conclave, cardinals will have the opportunity to get to know each other and interact with one another. On Sunday evening, the cardinals gathered at the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, the final resting place of the late Pope, to pray. Most of the cardinal candidates who are likely to succeed Pope Francis are known for their stance in support of the poor and against war. However, there are also conservative cardinals who advocate for the unity and integration of the church, following the footsteps of former popes such as Saint John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
From India, Cardinals Philip Neri Ferrao, Baselios Cleemis, Anthony Poola, and George Jacob Kookkakat will participate in the conclave. The papal conclave is a gathering of cardinals from around the world, all under the age of 80, to elect a new Pope. A total of 135 cardinals are eligible to participate, with 108 of them appointed by Pope Francis himself. The conclave will continue until a new Pope is elected, with each round of voting resulting in the ballots being burned, and the color of the smoke indicating whether a Pope has been elected or not.
Some of the potential candidates for the papacy include Cardinals Zhang Mar Aveline, Peter Erdo, Mario Grech, Juan Jose Omella, Pietro Parolin, Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, Joseph Tobin, Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, and Matteo Maria Zuppi. Once a new Pope is elected, he will be asked if he accepts the position, and if so, he will choose his official name, often the name of a previous saint. The news of the election will then be announced to the public, and the new Pope will be introduced to the world.
