Challenger Disaster: Tragedy in Space History

Space Shuttle Challenger

Florida: The Challenger disaster is one of the most painful stories in space history. On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida with seven passengers on board. The Challenger mission was to carry the Spartan Halley spacecraft and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite into space.

Krista McAuliffe, a teacher who won the competition for space travel, had a big dream. That dream was to share his experience of crossing the boundaries of the sky with the students. The mission faced many obstacles even before the launch. The launch was postponed several times.

On the eve of the final departure, Florida was hit by a strong cold wave. 73 seconds after the launch went by without any problems. By that time the spacecraft had reached an altitude of 14 km. Then an explosion. By the time those in the control center looked on in shock, the Challenger had broken apart and turned into a cloud of smoke.

The remains of the probe fell into the Atlantic Ocean. Massive search plans were launched but no trace of the caravan was found. After a long time, the remains of the probe were found. NASA later acted more cautiously.
