Donald Trump's physician, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, has pronounced the 78-year-old president "fully fit" to continue as commander-in-chief following a recent physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The thorough examination, including diagnostic and laboratory testing and consultations with 14 specialists, found that Trump has lost 20 pounds since his previous checkup in 2020, reducing his weight to 224 pounds.
Major Physical Exam Findings:
Weight Loss: Trump's weight loss has decreased his body mass index (BMI) to 28.0, classifying him as overweight, while in 2020 his BMI of 30.5 placed him in the obese range.
Cataract Surgery: Trump has had cataract surgery on both eyes in the past, a normal procedure among elderly people where a cloudy lens of the eye is removed and an artificial lens is implanted to enhance vision.
Colon Health: A July 2024 colonoscopy revealed a benign polyp and diverticulosis, which is when the walls of the intestine get weaker with age and may cause inflammation.
Cognitive Function: Trump was able to pass a Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, which tests different brain functions such as memory and solving problems. Trump particularly remembered a sequence of words: "Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV."
Mental Health: Trump performed normally on depression and anxiety questionnaires.
Overall Health Assessment
Trump is still "in excellent health" with "strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function," according to Barbabella. Trump's active life, including several meetings, public outings, and frequent golf wins, plays a major role in his good health. Trump's cholesterol levels have increased over time with the help of medications, and his resting heart rate is 62 beats per minute, which is good cardiovascular health.
Health Metrics:
Blood Pressure: 128/74, which is elevated and should be checked and diet modified in order to avoid high blood pressure.
Cholesterol Level: 140, which is less than the optimal level of 200.
Use of Aspirin: Trump uses aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke.
Skin Inspection: There were minimal sunspots and benign spots but no of particular concern. The inspection also confirmed scarring from a July 2024 attempted assassination shot to Trump's right ear ¹.
