Fights Break Out Over Aurangzeb's Grave in Nagpur, Probe Initiated
There was a high level of tension in Nagpur, India, when fights occurred near the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, which led to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordering a probe into the fight.
The confrontations reportedly took place when a group tried to go near the tomb, only to be confronted by another group. The situation soon turned violent, with both groups indulging in stone-pelting and acts of vandalism.
To maintain peace and order, police officers were dispatched to the location. The situation is now back to normal, but the authorities are on alert to avoid any other confrontations.
Fadnavis has promised that a detailed probe will be undertaken to find the reason behind the clashes and who was responsible. The investigation will also look into the reasons for the incident and suggest steps for avoiding such an incident in the future.
The tomb of Aurangzeb, which is situated in the Khuldabad region of Aurangabad district, has been a contentious issue in the past with certain groups calling for its destruction. But the tomb is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and damaging or destroying it is strictly prohibited.
The incident throws the spotlight on greater vigil and debate to ensure such confrontations are avoided that may have debilitating repercussions for social harmony and social cohesiveness.
