Alpine A390: The Next Electric SUV Revolution

Alpine A390

It will share its entrails with Renault and Nissan.

Alpine has already begun its path to transform into an exclusively electric car brand. The first to arrive will be the Alpine A290, a version with steroids of the new Renault R5, but shortly after the second will appear, an Alpine A390 about which there is still not much official information.

The French brand has previewed it on separate occasions, both in 2021 and 2023, showing some brief images that serve as previews, but in which only the profile of the vehicle could be seen.

From them it has only been possible to draw the conclusion that it will be an SUV that will rely on a coupe-style body. It is clear that it will have a notable size (C/D segment), it has the wheels at the ends to enjoy a long wheelbase, it has a short hood and from the windshield to the rear the roof forms a smooth continuous curved line.

Rumors suggest that it will have a length of approximately 4,600 mm, which would make it larger than the other models with which it will share the AmpR Medium platform: the Renault Mégane E-Tech (4,199 mm) and the Nissan Ariya (4,595 mm ).

By positioning, it seems that Alpine would seek to put on the table a rival to the Tesla Model Y, which is currently the model to beat, since in 2023 it was the best-selling car in the world and dominates in a large number of markets, including Europe.

There are hardly any clues about its design. We can only venture with the lighting signature of the model, since when the brand previewed its range of vehicles (image below), it showed the front of everyone in the dark, with the headlights on.

It is not entirely clear which one the A390 is specifically, but taking into account that there are going to be two other SUVs above it (the A490 and A590 GT), it is most likely that it is the third one from the left.

In that case it would be the one that would have a more distinctive look within the range, since along with the thin LED bar that crosses the entire width of the front, there are a kind of “fangs” made up of small LED segments.

There are not many details about its mechanical section either. Renault's AmpR Medium platform has been confirmed and Robert Bonetto, Vice President of Vehicle Projects at Alpine, stated that it would have a specific tune focused on high performance.

For his part, Gilles le Borgne, Technical Director of the Renault Group, has also indicated that it will have an all-wheel drive system with a “surprise” at the rear.

From there, guess. One of those that is gaining more strength is a configuration of two or three motors, with the 218 HP of the Mégane E-Tech mounted on the front axle and one or two in the rear, which would have advanced torque distribution characteristics to achieve a more sporty behavior.

One question that exists is whether it will surpass the most powerful model that currently uses said platform (which is still called CMF-EV), the Nissan Ariya Nismo B9 E-Force, which reaches 435 HP.
