Houston ∙ The 2024 Oscars witnessed the making and breaking of some major industry records. The 96th Academy Awards, a three-hour show at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, was once again remarkable for many reasons. One such 'performance' was when Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the show, took a grudge against former President Trump.
Kimmel spoke to the audience at the 96th Academy Awards shortly before 'Oppenheimer' won Best Picture. During the live broadcast, Kimmel read aloud a social media post in which Trump insulted him as this year's Oscar host. He began by saying that he wanted to share a 'review' of his performance as the host of the ceremony. Kimmel's speech appeared to be in response to a post on social media criticizing Kim's performance.
'Was there ever a worse host at the Oscars than Jimmy Kimmel? A below-average person tries hard to be something he is not and can never be.' Trump's post said. 'Get rid of Kimmel, maybe replace him with someone more talented. Let ABC 'Talent' be George Slopanopoulos. He would make everyone on stage bigger, stronger, more glamorous… blah, blah, blah. Make America Great Again' Now, see if you can guess which former President posted it on TruthSocial. Anyone? No?'- goes Kimmel's remarks.
Trump shared the post on his social media platform during the Oscar ceremony. 'Very bad politically correct show tonight. One of the most disjointed, boring and grossly unfair shows of the last several years. Why don't they give oscars to the deserving ones. Maybe so are their audiences and TV ratings. Come back from the depths. Make America Great Again.'

Responding to this, referring to Trump's multiple legal cases ranging from financial fraud to election interference, he asked, 'Isn't your jail time over?' asked that. Kimmel also thanked Trump for watching the ceremony. Kimmel's statement was met with applause from the audience. There was a big burst of laughter from the audience.
Trump has been charged with four counts of attempting to rig the 2020 Washington, D.C. election. 13 counts of election interference in Georgia; 34 counts of allegedly paying Stormy Daniels in New York; Other charges include 40 counts of hoarding classified documents after becoming president and obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them in Florida.
The incident is the latest in a series of heated arguments between Trump and Kimmel over the years. 'The lowest-rated Oscars in history. The problem is, we don't have any stars anymore – except for your president (who is funny of course)!' — posted by then-President Donald Trump after the show in 2018. It is also worth mentioning that Kimmel himself was the host of the show.
Rolling Stone previously reported that during his presidency in 2018, the former POTUS asked his staff to file a complaint against ABC's parent company, Disney, against Jimmy Kimmel. ABC is traditionally the broadcaster that airs the Oscars every year. Trump's complaint was about a joke the comedian made about him on Jimmy Kimmel Live. When interviewed by CNN ahead of Kimmel's fourth Academy Awards performance, he called the joke about Trump 'one of the best parts' of his job. Kimmel said he does this knowing he hates making fun of him and making fun of him.
