Padang (Indonesia): Floods and landslides after heavy rains in Sumatra island, Indonesia. Officials said that 19 people were killed and seven people were missing in the disaster. In West Sumatra, 14 houses were submerged and 20,000 houses were flooded.
Padang Pariaman Regency in West Sumatra was hit by heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. News agencies report that more than 80,000 people have since been moved to temporary shelters. Pesisir Selatan Disaster Mitigation Agency Acting Head Donny Guzrizal told AFP that power services were down in many parts of Pesisir Selatan after the disaster. He said debris from disasters hampered rescue operations and the impact following the floods was extraordinary.
Authorities are trying to make the road passable. Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season. Experts say the problem is getting worse due to deforestation and there is a possibility of prolonged torrential rains causing flooding in some areas of the archipelago.
