Ottawa: Canada will resume funding to UNRWA, the UN agency that provides food, medicine, education and shelter to Palestinians caught up in the siege and war. Following Israel's false allegation that 13 UNRWA staff participated in the Hamas attack on October 7, several countries, including Canada, suspended funding.
However, the agency has stated from the beginning that this is Israel's propaganda to starve Gaza to death. UNRWA said it has 13,000 staff under its command and will take strong action if any of them are found to have engaged in illegal activities. They have informed that they are ready to face any investigation for this.
A UN commission of inquiry was then appointed, but Israel was unable to produce any evidence of the allegations. Canada's CBC News reported, citing a senior government official, that the Canadian government decided to resume funding to UNRWA after the publication of the commission's interim report.
The report also stated that the Canadian government will resume funding based on the interim report of the UN investigation into Israel's allegations. UNRWA has previously said that Israel has failed to provide evidence to substantiate its claims.
CBC News said Canada will provide the $25 million it promised in April, with more funding to be announced.
