Robinho Arrested: Brazil Refuses Extradition Request

Brasilia: Former Brazilian football player Robinho was arrested after the court verdict that he should serve nine years in the rape case. The police arrested the 40-year-old man after reaching his flat in Santos. In 2017, the Italian court found the actor guilty of gang-raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in 2013.

Following Italy's request, the court ruled on Wednesday that Robinho should serve his sentence in Brazil. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens to other countries. In this case, he will be imprisoned in Brazil. Robinho is a former player of Spanish giants Real Madrid, English super club Manchester City and Italian club AC Milan.

Being a Milan star is becoming a partner in crime. After being found guilty, he had the opportunity to appeal in 2020, but did not do so. In 2022, Italy's highest court upheld the sentence and the prosecutor issued an international arrest warrant.

From 2003 to 2017, Robinho scored 28 goals in 100 matches for Brazil. The player, who participated in the La Liga title win twice for Real Madrid, was brought to the Manchester City team in 2008 for a then British record fee of 35.5 million euros. AC Milan arrived after two seasons. Robinho played there for five years and then played in China's Guangzhou Evergrande and Brazil's Atlético Mineiro at the end of his career.
