Washington: Donald Trump's efforts to become the Republican candidate in the US presidential election have suffered another setback. A US court has ordered Trump's name to be removed from the ballot in the Illinois state primary. With this, Trump cannot compete in the primary held in the state of Illinois. However, the court has temporarily stayed the ruling to allow Trump to appeal.
Judge Tracia Porter's order came after Illinois voters filed a petition seeking to ban Trump. The petitioners demanded that Trump be banned from the March 19 primary election and the November 5 general election.
The US Supreme Court heard arguments on February 8 regarding Trump's eligibility to run. According to the Supreme Court ruling, a decision will be made regarding Trump's eligibility to run in Illinois.
Meanwhile, Free Speech for the People has described the verdict as historic. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Trump's campaign said the ruling was unconstitutional. US states like Colorado and Maine also banned Trump from competing. Both bans have been stayed on Trump's appeal.
The demand in the related petitions is that Trump should be barred from running under Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Section three bars those who pledge to support the U.S. Constitution and then engage in rebellion against it or give aid to its enemies from constitutional office.
On January 6, 2021, Trump's supporters rioted at the US Capitol Building to prevent the recognition of US President Joe Biden's victory. This is what the former US president is in now.
