Khartoum: UNICEF warns that seven million children in the African country of Sudan are suffering from severe malnutrition and many of them are on the verge of death. The country was torn apart by a civil war between the armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RFF). This led to severe famine and displacement of millions.
Unicef stated that three lakh children suffering from severe malnutrition cannot be cared for without adequate facilities and other assistance. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder pointed out that thousands may die as a result.
These severely malnourished children are more prone to cholera and malaria. Unicef said that the remedy is therapeutic food that can be used immediately for children under five years of age.
