Judge Nawaf Salam has been a member of ICJ since February 6, 2018. Nawaf Salam was Lebanon’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from July 2007 to December 2018, before taking up the post of judge. Salam has a history of making anti-Israeli statements and will preside over the case initiated by South Africa against Israel, which claims that it is running the Idea clan in Gaza,’ I. C. Nawaf Salam had earlier called for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian people. In 2015, Salam had said that Israel should end its aggression. In the same year Nawaf wished an unhappy birthday against the Jewish state on Independence Day and highlighted their 48 years of occupation.

Nawaf Salam also reacted to his appointment as a new judge through his X account.

“I have been elected President of the International Court of Justice. Achieving international justice and upholding international law is my great responsibility,’ said Nawaf Salam.
