Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s staunch critic and opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died, prison officials said. Officials say he died while serving a prison sentence. The death information was released through a statement by the Federal Penitentiary Service in Yamal. Jail authorities inform that he was walking through the jail when he suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the hospital but his life could not be saved.
Navalny became active in the public arena by bringing the corruption stories of Putin and the Russian government to the public through his blog. After entering politics, Navalny became more of a headache for Putin. After that he was arrested and charged with various cases, but Navalny continued to criticize Putin and gained popular support. In 2020, there was an attempt to kill Navalny by using poison, but he came back to life. He was arrested again and put in jail.
He was serving a nine-year sentence for fraud and contempt of court and two-and-a-half years for a parole violation when he was released in August 2023.
He was also sentenced to 19 years in prison. Navalny was charged with serious crimes such as terrorism, citing activities against the state. Navalny received the longest sentence for a leader in Russian legal history.
