A silent pro-CNG wave is happening in the Indian auto market. According to the figures of the Union Ministry of Transport and Highways, 1.8 lakh CNG vehicles were newly registered in the country in 2023 alone. The growth is 53 percent compared to the previous year.

Last year, CNG managed to outpace conventional petrol and diesel vehicles. CNG cars performed best among budget car models. Better fuel efficiency, less pollution, lower ownership cost and more CNG stations are all in favor of the new trend.

Realizing the consumer preference for CNG, car manufacturers are also keeping ahead of this change by introducing more diverse models. Maruti Suzuki is the leading car manufacturer when it comes to CNG cars. Maruti Suzuki has already sold one million CNG cars in March 2022.

Tata was also noted for introducing the first Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) on CNG. CNG models are available in Tata’s Tiago and Tigor cars. Tata Motors also unveiled the Tata Nexon iCNG concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi. This was also Tata’s announcement that there is competition in the CNG market. As Tata’s mid-size SUV coupe, the Curve is also rumored to have a CNG variant.

Like Tata, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are in the CNG race. The i10, Exeter, Aura, Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Highrider all have CNG variants. It is clear that the arrival of CNG models of leading brands has influenced the choice of consumers.

The concern over the increase in fuel prices is forcing many to turn to CNG. Demand for factory-fitted CNG cars has also increased. Car manufacturing companies are ready to launch CNG models with better warranty and this has increased the confidence of the customers. CNG models are selling well globally. Lower fuel prices and lower emissions create favorable conditions for CNG cars.
