BYD YangWang U9: China's Electric Supercar Breakthrough

The BYD YangWang U9 has 1,305 HP.

BYD is one of the benchmarks for Chinese brands in European markets. We know it for its electric cars, but, seeing the reality of the Old Continent, it has just announced that it will also bring its plug-in hybrids to these parts. Furthermore, its business is quite varied and it even has a supercar among its ranks, although it is still unclear if it will make it here.

This is the BYD YangWang U9, which was shown for the first time in April 2023, but which has now been presented in its final production version and has attracted attention for its price, which moves away from the concept of being cheaper because it is Chinese and enters the league of brands such as Ferrari or Rimac.

And its practical rate doubles what was initially expected: it will be available from 1.68 million Chinese yuan, which at the current exchange rate amounts to about 215,500 euros, an amount reserved exclusively for the wealthiest.

Now, one of the keys is to see if a customer from outside China is willing to pay that amount for a model from that origin, since there are still prejudices about the Chinese automobile industry.

The truth is that the YangWang U9 has arguments to make potential buyers think about it, since we are talking about a high-performance electric hypercar.

Its design is radical, in fact, as radical as the one seen almost a year ago when it was first shown. It has a low and stylized silhouette, although the surprise has come from the fact that the voluminous rear spoiler can not be mounted, giving it a somewhat more subtle image. In addition, it is an element that changes its height.

It measures 4.97 meters long, 2.03 meters wide and 1.29 or 1.34 meters high, depending on whether you mount it or not; to which adds a wheelbase of 2.90 meters.

The key, however, is in its propulsion system, made up of four motors that give it all-wheel drive and deliver a total power of 1,305 HP, thanks to which it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed limited to 300 km/h.

Furthermore, although it is not the aspect that is most valued in this type of vehicle, due to its 100 kWh Blade battery it can travel 700 km per charge.

Up to this point we are talking about characteristics more or less similar to those of other electric hypercars in its category, but it is in its suspension where the U9 stands out compared to the competition, thanks to the so-called DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System.

In the first instance, it is a type of pneumatic suspension that allows the vehicle to be raised or lowered by up to 7.5 cm, something practical for dealing with potholes or getting into “serious” mode; but it is a system that goes further.

And this technology allows it to “shake” as if it were a dog, the most striking thing being the fact that, by compressing all the shock absorbers simultaneously and then releasing them at the same time, it is even capable of jumping.
