New York: The American newspaper, The New York Times, has to pay about four lakh dollars (about 3.3 crore Indian rupees according to today’s rate). The court ordered President Donald Trump. New York County Supreme Court Judge Justice Robert J. Reed was ordered to pay that amount as court costs. The order comes after Trump’s failed lawsuit against The New York Times.
The court ordered Trump to pay $393,000 in attorneys’ fees and other legal expenses, including $229,931 to New York Times reporters Susan Craig and Russell Buttner, and $162,717 to another journalist, David Burstow. Trump’s lawyers argued that the amount was excessive and unreasonable, but the court did not accept it.
Last year, the same court dismissed the lawsuit filed by Trump against the New York Times and three journalists demanding $10 million in damages. Trump sued the three journalists over a 2018 New York Times series about Trump’s undisclosed wealth. This was a Pulitzer Prize winning series.
In 2021, Donald Trump will approach the court against the New York Times and journalists. Trump filed the lawsuit, accusing the journalists of fraudulently conspiring to obtain classified documents and using them for his own benefit. But the court dismissed the case saying that Trump’s arguments were constitutionally wrong.
The New York Times welcomed the order that Trump pay court costs. The New York Times said in a statement that the verdict is a powerful message to those who abuse the justice system and try to silence journalists.
