A few days ago, Google CEO Sundar Pichai came out with a warning to lay off employees. The company also laid off nearly 1,000 employees last week. However, Google is once again taking drastic measures to harness new artificial intelligence possibilities in the workplace for better efficiency.
The US tech giant is set to reorganize parts of its ad-sales unit, which has around 30,000 employees. In short, AI is being employed instead of humans. International media reports that the company aims to make AI widespread. The company is now preparing to invest heavily in the field of artificial intelligence. There were reports that Google is planning to release the world’s most advanced AI in 2024.
Google’s Large Customer Sales (LCS) team, which handles large advertising clients, is being restructured. That said, the company is downgrading the LCS team, making the smaller advertiser-focused Google Customer Solutions (GCS) unit the main ad sales team. Google has confirmed that hundreds of people who worked in the LCS division globally will be let go as a result of the restructuring.
In a memo to employees, Sundar Pichai had indicated that the layoffs this year were aimed at streamlining operations by eliminating various management levels, promoting efficiency and increasing speed in specific areas. Now the company is implementing it.
AI has proved that humans are not needed…?
The current restructuring follows Google’s advances in AI tools that can automatically generate high-performing ads with relatively little human intervention. Google’s ‘Performance Max Platform’ with generative AI capabilities has succeeded in reducing the need for dedicated sales personnel.
Google recently laid off employees in several departments, including the hardware teams responsible for the Google Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit, central engineering teams, and Google Assistant. In January last year, 12,000 people in the company lost their jobs. With the spread of AI, other sectors will also face similar job losses.
