Google has introduced a system to transfer eSIM (eSIM) between Android phones while setting up a new smartphone. Google is coming up with a feature already in Samsung’s OneUI to easily transfer eSIM data.
What is E-SIM?
E-SIM is a digital SIM card. For that you can activate your desired plan of your preferred telecom operator. That is, the chip in our normal physical SIM card is stuck inside the phone and watch. It will also be part of the phone’s motherboard. Currently, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S series phones and Google Pixel phones also have the e-SIM facility. An e-SIM works just like a physical SIM. It is also possible to port the number and switch from one to another telecom service provider.
Borrowing Samsung’s idea…
Some of Samsung’s new e-SIM supported smartphones have a feature to easily convert physical SIM to e-SIM. Easy upgrade from old device if it has e-SIM. That is, first deactivate it from the old device. After that it can be reactivated on the new Samsung phone. These features were made available through the One UI 5.1 update.
But now Google is preparing to extend this feature to all other Android phones. Similarly, only users of US telecom giant T-Mobile can currently carry out this kind of SIM transfer. May reach other countries soon. As the infrastructure for secure QR code-based porting is ready, there are indications that support for more carriers is possible.
